As a South African, it was normal to spend one day every year watching runners compete in the Comrades Marathon. Now in the UK we have an opportunity to waste away any free time we have watching the Olympic torch as it makes its way across the country:
"70 days, 8,000 runners, 8,000 miles"
Technology is wonderful and as we watch these events on the BBC i player, we are not only able to be part of history but at the same time we are able to see parts of the country that we might never have seen otherwise.

The "Kiss" as the flame passes from one torch to the other. |
People all over the world are the same. The support and cheering reminds us of what we witnessed in SA during the Comrades Marathon as does the way the people run alongside the torch bearer.

Happy smiling runners. |

Crowds with flags and drums show their support along the route. |
The runners come from across the nation and young and old, fit and frail all have one thing in common, they are happy and proud to have been chosen for this responsible task. Those who are young enough will remember these days when next the Olympics are held in the UK as some of those who witnessed it in 1948 have said that they did.
