Music and Mardling at Downham

As part of Downham Market Festival week an evening of Music and Mardling was arranged at Downham Market Methodist Church. There was a very good turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening of light hearted entertainment.

The Mardling (conversation) was very entertaining even though at times, because of the Norfolk dialect, it was not very easy to understand. Most of those attending were from Norfolk so they had no problems at all but being a South African made it a little difficult for me.

The singing of the old traditional songs, some of which were over two hundred years old, emphasised the atmosphere and told their own stories and added to ones understanding of the Norfolk culture.

At the end of the performance we all enjoyed some refreshments while the chatting continued. An evening that helped us to understand the very special people in this area.
